About CBCT Scan

Sentry Dental Lab is dedicated to investing in the latest technology and procedures in the dental community. With this in mind, SDL is pleased to announce the newest addition to our dental lab: a CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scanner.

What is a Dental CBCT scanner?

Dental CBCT is a compact, faster and safer version of the regular CT. Dental CBCT scans use advanced computer programs to analyze an X-ray study. By providing detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional images, Dental CBCT scans enable the dentist to more thoroughly evaluate the patient before any dental procedures.

How does a dental CBCT Scan differ from conventional X-rays?

  • Routine dental x-rays are two-dimensional; they only show the location of teeth and the height of the bone. These x-rays are often distorted, and they cannot depict the thickness of your jawbone.
  • On the other hand, a dental CBCT scan is distortion free. It illustrates the actual make-up of the bone and provides three-dimensional and cross-sectional views of your jaws. The life-sized images allow your dentist to accurately measure the amount of bone that is available for implants.
  • Not only that, but through the use of a cone shaped X-Ray beam, the size of the scanner, radiation dosage and time needed for scanning are all dramatically reduced.

Why do I need such a specialized x-ray?

  • The specialized CBCT scan brings a variety of blessings to both you, the dentist, and your patients. First, it can help you determine if a patient is a good candidate for implant surgery. This could save you an unnecessary operation! On the other hand, in the event of a surgery, there will be surprises: dentists will know the exact location of anatomical structures, the contours of the jaw bone, and the best sites for implants before surgery. This means less operating time, and fewer complications teamed with the patient having greater confidence in the success of the surgery. All of this results in happier patients and an increase in revenue!

What are some specific examples of application?

  • Oral surgery
  • Implant planning
  • Orthodontic planning, implant
  • Anchorage
  • TMJ analysis
  • Airway study (sleep apnea)
  • Jaw Tumor
  • Impacted teeth
  • Periodontal disease
  • Endondontic anomalies

What about the radiation aspects?

  • Sentry Dental Laboratory uses the Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scanner which is compact in size. The relatively low radiation dosage makes it ideal for imaging the craniofacial region, including dental structures. Patients are exposed to 98% less radiation, limiting the possibility of health risks associated with radiation exposure. In fact, patients will absorb even less radiation than a standard chest x-ray.

How will I receive the results of the scan?

  • We want to provide you, the dentist, with as much crucial information as possible in a timely manner. We commit to providing results in the form of a printed out report (complete with valuable targeted images), as well as an interactive CD which contains all of the images from the scan. This will allow you to further assess and explore the patient’s craniofacial region as you wish.
